The all-Russian youth windsurfing regatta aims to promote windsurfing amongst young people - Baltic Windsurfing Cup 2012 Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg 2012
Baltic Windsurfing Cup 2012 was hosted by the Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg between the 14th and 21st July. This is an all-Russian, youth windsurfing regatta which promotes windsurfing amongst young people, bringing them together in a competitive and encouraging environment. Sixteen young windsurfers competed in this tournament, in twelve races, across three classes, comprising the DNK 5.0, the DNK 6.8 and the T293 7.8 classes.
Although the week began in windy and rainy conditions, impelling some competitors to drop out, the competition was tough and exciting. The DNK 5.0 class in particular saw some extreme rivalry, when only two points separated Dmitriy Sandakov, the winner, and Egor Zhilin, who came in second place. In the DNK 6.8 class, Grigoriy Mikhalev sped ahead to an outstanding finish, leaving his opponents far behind. The proud winner of the T293 7.8 class was Hristina Mayorova.
Vladimir Liubomirov, Commodore of the Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg, explains the interest that the Yacht Club holds for putting on such events: 'At our Club we place great emphasis on children and their future – throughout the year, we organise a series of youth regattas both nationally and internationally. We believe that outdoor sports provide a wholesome way for young people to develop, and it is fantastic to see such determination and skill as we have over this past week. It is also great to see the Yacht Club, which is truly a versatile venue, attract such an exciting sport as windsurfing.'
