Sail-World NZ - Sept 11 - The leaky Cup...Nacra success...Kiwis in VOR
| Anarchy and Millennium RNZYS Winter Race Saturday September 9, 2017 Richard Gladwell | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand e-magazine for Sept 11, 2017
The confirmation late this afternoon that the next America's Cup would be sailed in a monohull has drawn a muted reaction.
The type of yacht to be used in the America's Cup was supposed to have been advised when the Protocol is announced at the end of September.
However, that was foreshortened today with reports in the Italian press citing comments attributed to Patrizio Bertelli, Patron of Challenger of Record, Luna Rossa that a high-performance monohull had been chosen.
The other news was nothing new - that there would be a more stringent nationality clause than one of the sailing crew holding a passport for the country of the challenging/defending club.

What most fans are seeking in the America's Cup is some continuity.
While that may have been the intention of the 'Framework' signed off by five of the six teams in the 35th America's Cup, the problem was that there was a lack of transparency - the full signed agreement was never released.
In the end, the team that won the 35th America's Cup was the one that didn't sign. Quite whether we have heard the end of the Framework will be answered in the coming months.
Also to be answered is whether the America's Cup can withstand the near constant fiddling with boats and rules and the obsolescence that follows.
As a result of today's decision three of the teams associated with the 35th America's Cup have four or five AC45S and AC50's each that don't fit the next Cup.

For any new teams coming into the America's Cup, it may not make a lot of difference whether they sail a mono or multihull. But either way, they do have to go through a massive start up to catch up with the technology base of Emirates Team NZ and any of the teams from the 35th America's Cup who elect to return.
The advantage of staying with a multihull was that there is/was a base of information. Now everyone is back to a common starting point of a blank design board, except that any new class has to go through a start up process, which means that each team has to build multiple boats, unless a one-design is used.
But the America's Cup is supposed to be a design contest isn't it? So forget about the one design.

Second guessing the upcoming Protocol, we can probably also expect a much more stringent constructed in country rule than was the case for the 35th America's Cup.
However, all will be revealed around the end of September - maybe before.
New Zealand finished out of the medals at the Nacra 17 Worlds in La Grande Motte, France. However, two crews in the top ten is a very good result at this stage of the Olympic cycle.
Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders had an unlucky series, particularly on the penultimate day, but were still able to finish within two points of a Bronze medal after the Italians had a collision with a Spanish crew helmed by Volvo Ocean Race skipper, and 2004 Olympic Gold medalist Iker Martinez. The collision was sufficient to dismast Martinez, and both boats did not finish.
The second New Zealand crew of Olivia Mackay and Micah Wilkinson finished in 10th overall, after being in sixth place overall going into the final day. They were still in contention right until the double scoring medal race when they finished 9th.
We have daily reports from the regatta in this edition.
