Jo Aleh grinds during the Rolex Fastnet 2017,08 August,2017  Rich Edwards/Volvo Ocean Race
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand e-magazine for August 25, 2017

I am very pleased to be able to report that Lone Wolf (the story of Emirates Team NZ's success at the 35th America's Cup) is at the printers, as of Tuesday, and will be in the bookshops, all going well in mid-October.

Given what has happened with other America's Cup content it seems as though Lone Wolf will be the only record from the 35th America's Cup. It is the first major America's Cup title to be launched in New Zealand in 20 years. Just on 30 years have passed since Alan Sefton's 'KZ-7' was published.

God knows how many Rugby books have been published in that period - which says a few things about Rugby and Sailing in New Zealand.

The sailing scene is relatively quiet in New Zealand but active in the northern hemisphere where it is summer.

The Volvo Ocean Race gets underway in 58 days. No New Zealand entry. But there will be plenty of Kiwi interest with America's Cup and Olympic champions Blair Tuke and Peter Burling racing on the top boats.

That level of interest would have been so much more with Jo Aleh on board one of the boats. Sad news today that the double Olympic medalist didn't make the crew list for Team Brunel, aboard which she had been trailing.

The Volvo Ocean Race has taken the lead in promoting the involvement of women in sailing crews - restricting male crews to just seven sailors, and 11 sailors for an all female crew, with various option available for a mixed gender crew.

Personally I don't subscribe to female quotas, I think it is condescending. But the reality is that without quotas nothing changes. At Olympic level the number of events and medals for Men and Women should be equal reflecting the population balance.

Rowing has a similar but different issue with lightweight rowers. While there are always exceptions, generally a physically bigger rower with more muscle should be able to beat a lighter, less muscled rower. It doesn't matter too much which gender you are the same generalisation applies.

Interestingly in rowing - split by gender and also with two weight divisions within gender, at school level at least there are more female competitors than male and the same number of events. On that basis, you could quite successfully argue that it is harder to win a medal as a female rower than the 'soft' medals in male rowing.

Essentially the issues with females competing in sailing events which have been male dominated are that because of the history of male dominance there are few females around with the skills of males of a similar age.

Pak Sha Wan, the aftermath of Typhoon Hato  Steve Pheby

It is hard to understand why there aren't more female navigators in offshore sailing. Women are generally smarter and more methodical than their male counterparts. Plus generally being lighter it is less of a big deal to have them off the rail than as with male crew members.

There have been some outstanding female navigators in offshore racing, in New Zealand and internationally - the only surprise is that there aren't more. From there is it a short step into a tactician's role and generally taking over the back end of the boat.

Same song, second verse in the bow 'mans' role.

2017 J-Class World Championship - Day 2  Ingrid Abery

Some interesting statistics came out of the America's Cup and Challenger Final.

The America's Cup was a lot more lop-sided than the results suggest - which is widely recorded as being 7-1 in terms of points.

The real score is 8-1 in terms of wins.

In terms of Marks won the score is a massive dominance by Emirates Team New Zealand leading around 49 of the 54 marks in the nine race Match.

In the Challenger Final, it was much more even with Emirates Team New Zealand leading around 22 marks compared to Artemis Racing's 20 marks 'won'.

The very interesting statistic is that in the first half - or more than half - the first four of seven races, Artemis Racing won 18 marks compared to Emirates Team New Zealand's six mark wins.

However, in the backend of the Challenger Final, Emirates Team NZ won 16 marks compared to Artemis Racing's two mark wins.

That stacks up with the view that Emirates Team New Zealand's most critical day of the regatta was the second day of the Challenger Final. That is the point where Emirates Team New Zealand rose to ascendancy after the first race of the day when the score was 2-2, and the Kiwis completely dominated the final two days - carrying that form into the America's Cup itself.

The J-Class are holding their first world championship in Newport RI, with six of the yachts competing out of nine currently sailing. Missing is the 1937 America's Cup Challenger, Shamrock V, which sailed in Bermuda.

J-Class World Championship 2017 – Day 1  JClass - Carlo Borlenghi

In this edition we have plenty of images from the regatta, showing the giants of the sailing world at their best.

We also have news of the latest safety device which should be a must have for all who sail alone, and in fact all those who are on the helm alone of a power boat or yacht.

Kiwi Yachting have imported the Fell Man Over Board wireless kill switch, which like the more accepted powerboat kill switch cord will stop the boats engine when the wearer falls into the water. Unlike the more usual cable allows greater freedom of movement, which means that it is worn more frequently. A wristband model is one of the options.

A great present for Fathers Day, next month?

And if you have any crazed deck hatches which are screaming out to be replaced, Kiwi Yachting have a great deal for you - details in this edition.
