24hr race at Coleraine Yacht Club Preview

by Leonard McNeill 7 Mar 2002 08:16 PST

This year sees the 34th 24 hour race on the River Bann, a unique event in Ireland, on as challenging a course as can be found anywhere. The combination of sweeping bends in the river, which drains 2/3 of Northern Ireland, strong tides and a narrow channel, is enough in itself to make this an exceptional race. The river runs at between 2 and 5 knots. Also to be taken into consideration are the ebb and flood.

Tactics are of paramount importance. Obviously the 1999 winners, Strathclyde University, had done their homework even if it was their first entry to this race. The fact that the team captain comes from that renowned club – West Lancs. Yacht Club – the original founders of the 24hr Race - probably assisted them somewhat!)

  • Up to the minute position fixing by computer.

A tradition of excellence is the driving force in all that we do to make your participation in our event something to remember and repeat.
