MYA Scottish District IOM Championship 2026 at Kinghorn Radio Sailing Club

by Malcolm Durie 26 Oct 10:48 PDT 24 October 2026

2026 MYA Scottish District IOM Championship took place at Kinghorn Loch on Saturday, 24th October 2026. The event was hosted by Kinghorn Radio Sailing Club with Richard Ennos as the Race Officer and Stuart Teasdale Assisting, Malcolm Durie was the event Secretary and Scorer, Keith Brebner was photographer and observer, Hutch Grant and Bill Simpson handled the finish line with boatmen Kevin Locke and Lindsay Odie.

Kinghorn Radio Sailing Club were pleased to welcome ten skippers from around Scotland representing six clubs: Ayr Bay, Buchanness, Greenock, Kinghorn, Paisley and Tayside. The fleet was a mixture of home built and commercial hulls of wooden, fiberglass and 3D printed construction of varying designs (Alioth, Britpop, Buzz 3C, Cheinz, Cheinz 2, Corbie 6, Proteus and Venti).

Richard Ennos gave an overview of the setup for the days racing. He introduced the race team to the competitors and outlined the course. The start was across the inlet adjacent to the western slipway into the loch, then across to the southern windward mark, back and around the shore buoy adjacent to the jetty and around the buoy at the western end of the start line. The racing had two laps of this course and then three as the wind speed increased.

On the day we had a light variable wind from the south for the morning races which necessitated the windward mark being relocated several times. The skippers used their A rigs in the session up until lunchtime. During this time, Steve Taylor dominated the racing with consistent podium places. However, four different skippers scored race wins and a further four skippers scoring podium positions.

After lunch the wind picked up a little and nine of the competitors changed down to their B rigs. Despite the Yellow Weather Warning there were some showers but these cleared mid-afternoon and the sun came out. During the afternoon session, nearly every skipper scored at least one podium position. However, Steve Taylor continued to dominate the racing although Simon Thompson put in a strong series of results to pull himself up the results table. The racing concluded at about 15.40 hrs after sixteen races had been completed with three discards applied.

Richard Ennos announced the results and presented the MYA Scottish District IOM Championship trophy to the 2026 event winner, Steve Taylor, who was first with a score of 23 points. Simon Thomson was second with a score of 51 points and Brian Summers was third with a score of 53 points. Richard Rowan finished fourth on 55 points. The overall 2026 MYA Scottish District IOM Championship Series winner was Brian Summers who was presented with the prestigious Lipton Trophy.

Thanks to all the competitors for travelling and taking part in the event and the race team from Kinghorn Radio Sailing Club for ensuring the event ran smoothly.

A great course set up, and the full length of the South Bank was used A good breeze from just North of west was blowing when we arrived, and questions were asked as to what rig to put on. Great breeze, great turnout, and smiles all round Another fine day at Lincoln, great breeze, great turnout, and smiles all round. A bit of a switch around on the OOD front but with Darin and Tim on site early, things were well advanced by the time the main body of skippers arrived. Posted on 22 Jun
