A unique celebration of sailing, working boats and community returns to Balmain on Sunday 25th of October 2026, bringing Sydney Harbour's rich maritime history to life.

First held in 1849, the Balmain Regatta is believed to be the only remaining event of its kind, celebrating the full spectrum of maritime life, from competitive sailing and historic working boats to the remarkable Balmain Bugs and a vibrant shoreside community.

This year's regatta will feature up to 100 sailing competitors, from modern racing craft and historic yachts to the iconic 18-footers. On the water, a convoy of up to 70 working boats will parade from Balmain to Fort Denison and return, featuring modern and historic tugboats, tall ships, naval launches and commercial vessels.

A new highlight for this year is Bug Day Out, celebrating the extraordinary Balmain Bugs; model racing skiffs with a special place in Sydney Harbour's sailing history. Led by Balmain Sailing Club's iconic six-footer, the display will include model racing skiffs ranging from tiny six-inch models to a recently restored racing two-footer.

Despite their vastly different sizes, these boats share the same rigging, sail dimensions and design characteristics as their larger counterparts, connecting generations of sailing heritage rooted in Balmain.

The public is invited to enjoy the spectacle from the shore, with a free community event featuring live music and a barbecue.

Keeping maritime history alive

The Balmain Regatta brings to life the story of Sydney Harbour and the working and sporting traditions of a community shaped by shipbuilding and related maritime industries. Historic posters and newspaper illustrations show the same scenes witnessed today: diverse vessels on the water and crowds gathering along the shoreline to enjoy the festivities.

"We're proud to keep this unique event alive and see it continue to grow," said Balmain Sailing Club Commodore Campbell Reid. "This year, competitors in both the sailing and workboat events are coming from as far away as Newcastle. With tall ships, historic 18-footers and a firefighting tug among the vessels on display, the spectacle from shore will be better than ever."

"Our flagship six-foot skiff, which has become famous around the world through social media, will be joined by a collection of model racing skiffs that played an important role in Sydney Harbour's sailing history. From the tiniest models to the towering 18-footers, they all share a common heritage, and this year, we're bringing them together for our first Bug Day Out."

Supported by the local community

The Balmain Regatta is made possible through the support of local businesses and community partners.

The club thanks long-term sponsor Cobden Hayson and Svitzer for supporting the workboat convoy. This year, the club also welcomes Rozelle Village as a new sponsor, providing a coffee cart for participants... a much-requested addition to the event!

The club also acknowledges Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne and his team for their ongoing support, along with NSW MP Kobi Shetty for supporting the club's current project to build fully accessible bathrooms.

The Balmain Regatta remains a proud celebration of the area's maritime legacy, bringing together sailors, vessel owners, families and the wider community to keep a unique part of Sydney's history alive.
