First ever Hansa TT at Papercourt Sailing Club

by Niall Maynard 14 Oct 02:59 PDT 30 September 2026

It was the best of days. It was an amazing day. Papercourt Sailing Club were hosting their first ever Hansa TT event. No 11 in the 12 event series of open meetings held around the country. Early morning the car park was packed with boats being unloaded and rigged and folks meeting up and renewing acquaintances.

With bright sunshine and a reasonable wind that got even better in the afternoon 26 boats enjoyed the day competing in four classes - 2 in the Hansa 2.3, 11 in the Hansa 303 single handed, 8 in the Hansa 303 double handed and 5 in the Liberty single handed.

The goal was to have 2 races in the morning and 2 in the afternoon with 3 out of 4 to count. After two races Sarah Parker and Lindsey Burns were sharing the lead with one victory each in the Hansa 2.3. In the Hansa 303 single handed Sophie Brisley on 3 points was leading Phil Monk on 5 points with Margaret Foreman on 9 points.

In the Hansa 303 Doubles Philip Hall and Rick Jillings had a win and a second each, drawing away from the fleet of 8 boats with Andrew Holmes and Stephen Kitson in 2nd and 3rd place with 8 and 9 points apiece. In the Liberty class Mike Everitt, Paul Pearson and Tessa Watkiss all scored 4 points to share the lead.

After a splendid lunch laid on by the Papercourt volunteers, racing resumed with 2 more races. Sarah Parker consolidated her earlier win to take the Hansa 2.3 prize. While in the Hansa One person Sophie Brisley managed to pip James Woosnam who claimed 2 firsts, but due to a retirement in race 2 lost out on winning. Phil Monk came in 3rd with a 4th and 2nd place.

In the Hansa Doubles Philip Hall consolidated his lead with 2 more 1st places, Rick Jillings pulled into 2nd place with a 6th and a 5th, with Stephen Kitson getting a 2nd and a 6th to come in 3rd.

The Liberty class saw some more close racing. Mike Everitt pulled away with 2 firsts, chased by Paul Pearson coming 2nd with a 2nd and a 5th and Tessa Watkiss coming in 3rd with a 3rd and 4th.

A lavish match tea provided by the PSC Sailability volunteers was enjoyed followed by prize-giving.

A good day had been had by all with the general feeling that we should come back to Papercourt and do it all again next year!
