The 51st annual RATU Rum St Helena Cup kicked off on Moreton Bay today, with 88 boats and more than 500 participants taking to the water in one of Queensland's most recognised sailing events.
Hosted by Wynnum Manly Yacht Club, the regatta has drawn competitors from across South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales for over half a decade, continuing a tradition that has made the St Helena Cup a permanent fixture on the sailing calendar.
Today, on Day 1 of the two-day event, crews were treated to fast-paced racing and colourful conditions as an impressive fleet of spinnakers filled the bay skyline.
Sailed on the event's iconic hourglass course, the St Helena Cup remains a favourite among competitors, many describing it as "the big one" or "the one you can't miss" each sailing season.
The opening race began with a dramatic start, as a general recall was called shortly after the fleet launched from the line. Race officials quickly reset the fleet, and a clean second start saw competitors away without incident and charging towards the first mark under ideal racing conditions.
"The conditions delivered exactly what sailors come to the St Helena Cup for," said Wynnum Manly Yacht Club's Commodore, John Vandermaat.
"There was plenty of breeze, close racing across the fleet and a spectacular sight as the fleet headed across Moreton Bay. The St Helena Cup continues to attract sailors from throughout the region because of its reputation for quality racing and the unique atmosphere both on and off the water."
The 15 knot south-easterly winds tested crews throughout the afternoon, rewarding teamwork, tactical decision-making and precise boat handling. With a wide range of trailer sailers, offshore yachts and sports boats represented, competition remains tight heading into the second and final day of racing.
Race officials are expecting another competitive day on Sunday as crews battle for divisional honours and the coveted RATU Rum St Helena Cup trophies.
