Wellington to Akaroa Offshore Race returns

The Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club (RPNYC) is delighted to announce the return of the iconic Wellington to Akaroa Yacht Race, setting sail on 4 February 2027.
Following the success of the 2025 event, the race returns to the calendar to challenge sailors on one of New Zealand's most dynamic coastal courses.
Hosted in partnership with Akaroa Yacht Club, the 2027 race will see crews battle the elements as they make their way down the east coast of the South Island. Known for its shifting coastal winds and demanding tactical decisions, the approximately 200 nautical mile course offers a true test of seamanship, strategy and coastal navigation.
The race record of 23 hours, 9 minutes and 41 seconds was set by Chain Reaction (Elliott 1050) back in 1997. Crusader (Elliott 35ss) came close to breaking the record in 2015, while competing as part of the Central Triangle race.
Open to keelboats holding a current Yachting New Zealand Category 2 Safety Certificate, the race has both fully crewed and two-handed divisions and forms part of the RPNYC Barton Marine Offshore Championship.

After crossing the finish line in historic Akaroa Harbour, competitors can look forward to the renowned hospitality of Akaroa Yacht Club. The host club has a strong reputation providing a warm Southern welcome to visiting crew, making Akaroa a memorable destination both on and off the water.
