Pensacola Yacht Club to host 2026 Viper 640 North American Championship

Pensacola Yacht Club will welcome some of North America's top high-performance sailors to Pensacola this fall when it hosts the 2026 Viper 640 North American Championship, Sept. 30-Oct. 4.
The championship is expected to draw 35 to 40 Viper 640s and sailors from across North America for five days of competition on Pensacola Bay. The event is the biggest championship on the Viper 640 International Class Association's calendar and will showcase some of the most competitive one-design racing in the sport.
The championship will also have a local connection, with two Pensacola Yacht Club competitors currently registered to take part in the North American Championship: Harrison Prochaska of Gulf Breeze and Mike Levert of Pensacola.
"This is going to be an exciting event for both the sailors and the Pensacola sailing community," said PYC's Tom Pace, Viper Regatta Chair. "The Viper 640 is a fast, responsive boat that rewards good teamwork, boat handling and tactics. With a fleet this size, the racing is going to be incredibly competitive, and we're looking forward to welcoming sailors from throughout North America to Pensacola."
The Viper 640 is a 21-foot, two- to four-person sports boat built to make high-performance sailing fast, fun, and accessible. Because the boats are built to strict class specifications, the competition is designed to put the emphasis on the sailors rather than differences in boat design. Sails are the primary permitted variable, creating an extremely-level playing field.
The boats are also remarkably responsive in light air. They can begin sailing in only about 3 to 4 mph of wind, while stronger conditions can present a significant challenge for the lightweight, high-performance boats. That makes wind conditions on Pensacola Bay an important factor throughout the championship.
"The Viper is a unique boat because it can really come alive in relatively light wind," Pace said. "But as the breeze builds, the boat becomes a handful, which puts even more emphasis on the crew's ability to read the conditions and make the right decisions."
Racing will take place on Pensacola Bay southeast of the entrance to Bayou Chico, with the fleet competing as a single class. The preliminary schedule calls for the first warning signal at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, followed by racing Friday and Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. and Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. Up to five races may be sailed each day, weather permitting. The championship will conclude with an awards ceremony Sunday following racing.
For Pensacola Yacht Club, hosting the North American Championship is another opportunity to showcase Pensacola Bay as a premier sailing venue.

The Viper 640's design also makes it particularly well suited to traveling regattas. The boats are lightweight, easily transported and can be rigged quickly, allowing teams to travel with their boats and compete at events throughout North America.
