For more than 40 years, the world's top yacht designers, leading sailors and most passionate owners have gathered each September on the north-east coast of the Italian island of Sardinia. The lure has been the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.
A lodestone for yachting's elite, it is a benchmark for innovation, performance and skill at the highest level. Organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in conjunction with the International Maxi Association (IMA) and Rolex, this week-long regatta demands detailed preparation, near flawless crew work and tactical acumen.
Centred on the stunningly picturesque harbour of Porto Cervo, the 2026 edition takes place from 6 to 12 September. Paul Cayard, the Rolex Testimonee and renowned sailor, returns to compete on the 27.4-metre ClubSwan 80 My Song. His connection with the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup stretches back to the first edition in 1985, the same year the Swiss watchmaker became Title Sponsor. As helm on Il Moro di Venezia II Cayard finished second overall, winning three races.

Already highly regarded at home in the United States, Cayard was launched onto the global stage in part through his participation at the biggest regatta on the international Maxi circuit. In the course of a decorated career, he has competed at the Admiral's Cup, the America's Cup and the Whitbread Round the World Race, which he won at the first attempt. Adding both the Star and Etchells world titles to his glittering list of honours in the past 12 months is evidence that Cayard continues to refine his craft more than four decades on.
A fleet of 50 complex and extraordinarily powerful yachts typically contest the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, all entries more than 18.29 metres (60 feet) in length. The regatta represents one of Rolex's most enduring associations within a global presence in the sport that spans almost 70 years. Long-standing relationships with both the YCCS and the IMA reflect the strength of a shared vision for excellence as well as the desire to safeguard heritage and to inspire development. Cayard's journey within sailing demonstrates the same fundamental philosophy, and he is quick to recognize the benefits of the tripartite partnership:

Entries this year include several past winners: the 21.4-metre Django 7X, a no-compromise racing machine and class winner on its debut in 2025; three-time winner Galateia, a 30.48-metre lightweight, high performance luxury cruiser; H20, a 23.80-metre cruiser/racer with a remarkable seven class victories; and Leopard 3, the 30.48-metre Maxi, which took top spot in 2024 despite being launched in 2007, testament to impeccable and continued upgrading as much as the skill of the crew.
Cayard considers the waters of the Costa Smeralda to be a grand prix arena that delivers a fitting test for all those taking part:
