2026 Bayview Mackinac Race - Pushed to the limit

The 2026 Bayview Mackinac Race was not for the faint of heart. In the final offshore race of our 2026 Summer Season, teams were pushed to the limit.

The race is the world's longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race, with this year being the 102nd iteration of the race.

The race began on Saturday, July 18th with teams having to navigate thick wildfire smoke that was blown down from Canada. And following the start conditions only continued to deteriorate. Throughout Saturday and into the early morning hours of Sunday, racers battled through multiple squalls with consistent breeze of 30+ knots and some teams reporting gusts of over 40 knots. Of the 193 boats that started the race, only 105 made it to the finish line. Unfortunately our very own Mockingbird, fresh off their Chicago Mac win, was forced to retire following an equipment failure. Luckily, there were no serious injuries reported and all racers have made it safely to land.

After a full-on, no holds barred, drag race up Lake Huron between Natalie J and Heartbreaker it was Phil and Sharon O'Niel's mighty Natalie J that emerged victorious. Natalie J won both their division (Class A) as well as the overall trophy. Aside from impressive speed, Phil O'Niel emphasized the tenacity the entire fleet showcased saying, "with 85 boats dropping out of the race, the 52s showed how rugged the boats are, and how competent our crews really are. It took great seamanship to finish this race." With this victory, Phil and his team capped off an impressive offshore season, they won the Queens Cup and finished second in their division and third overall at this year's Chicago to Mackinac race.

No stranger to the Great Lakes distance races, Heartbreaker owner and skipper Bob Hughes remarked on how truly challenging this year's conditions were, "[this was the] hardest Mac race I have ever done (between 39 Chicago and 20 BYC races). Even in those conditions [the race] featured classic GL52 boat-on-boat drag racing and the King of Lake Huron Phil, and [his] team ruled the day in extreme conditions. [It's] one thing to complete a race like that, but it's another thing to sail with tactical brilliance."

Following Natalie J and Heartbreaker was John Evans and Trey Sheehan's Hooligan Racing, Jack Kitrenos and his team aboard Nimbus and John Brynjolfsson's Fjord rounded out the fleet.

Most of the teams that raced the Bayview Mackinac Race will soon head to Harbor Springs, MI to meet up with the rest of our fleet and compete in the 2026 Ugotta Regatta. Featuring two days of buoy racing and two "Tour of the Bay" days, Ugotta Regatta has a little something for everyone.
