Two new Canadian champions named in Charlottetown Race Week 2026

A crew of Trekkies are the 2026 Canadian National Etchells champions after winning their class in EZ Dock Charlottetown Race Week/One Design Speed Week sponsored by Warehouse 8.
The three day regatta in the Prince Edward Island capital city wrapped up on Saturday, July 18th. With a boat named Vulcan and with the famous "Live Long and Prosper" salute portrayed larger than life on their spinnaker, skipper Peter Scott just laughs when he's asked why - "we're all just big fans of Star Trek" is his answer. Scott and his crew have sailed their Etchells for 8 years out of the Charlottetown Yacht Club with a solid record of winning club competitions.
The other winning skipper of a Canadian championship in Charlottetown is more down to earth-but all the same wants to "...boldly go where no Canadian has gone before"... Kelly Hansen of London, Ontario wants to be the first Canadian to win a World Championship in the J/70 class. He came to Charlottetown with his eye on the J/70 Canadian championship so he can secure an invitation to compete in the J/70 Worlds next year. Hansen, a member of the Reef Boat Club in Meaford, Ontario which is on Georgian Bay, bought his J/70 in 2022 and has been successfully campaigning during the winter in Florida, and various regattas on the East coast. His J/70 crew is made up of three American professional sailors Travis Odenbach, Ronald Weed and Collin Kirby. The crew has already had a number of top ten finishes in the highly competitive fleet, which attracts the best sailors in the world.
"It was a 'top rate' time in Charlottetown," Hansen says, gesturing to the harbour lined with red cliffs, "we get to hang out in beautiful places like this."
Due to heavy wind in Hillsborough Bay, the J/70's raced in the more protected inner harbour for one afternoon. "That was great fun - kinda of like Formula 1 car racing" according to Hansen describing a compressed race course which lay just off the boardwalk at the city's Victoria Park. He and his crew won all seven races in which they competed. "We don't take any chances. This is an expensive undertaking and we don't want to be knocked out of racing due to some small equipment issue." The next regatta for the 7th Heaven crew is the Verve Cup Inshore Regatta in Chicago next month. And then they'll compete in several events during the fall in the Annapolis area.
Charlottetown Race Week recognized Hansen's strong performance by awarding him the David O. Mosher Trophy for the best results of the regatta by an out-of-province skipper in a competitive fleet.
Other notable wins at Charlottetown include skipper Peter Toombs in the Farr 30 class with HeadFirst3, and the J-29 crew of Satisfaction, skippered by Randy Johnson. In PHRF racing, Young Blood, a J/100 skippered by Larry Creaser of the Chester (NS) Yacht Club was on top in PHRF A class and in PHRF B class, a Melges 24 named Gambler from the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron with Ryan Gallant at the helm won all six races.
Next year's Charlottetown Race Week has already been set for July 15-17, 2027.
