Worrell 1000 Returns in 2028 for Legacy Run

The organizers of the legendary catamaran race, The Worrell 1000, have announced the event's return, officially scheduled for 2028.

Following the 2024 event, the organizers elected to take an operational pause to address administrative challenges. Acknowledging a period of silence on public platforms and media channels, the newly reorganized leadership team has spent the interim months quietly executing a top-down restructuring to ensure the race's long-term survival and integrity.

"We know our community, sponsors, and media partners have been waiting for answers, and we deeply appreciate their patience during this time," said John Williams, newly appointed Board Member and Race Officer. "We've taken the needed time to work on the administrative fundamentals, and we are returning with total structural alignment, absolute transparency, and the organizational support this historic race deserves."

With a legacy spanning over half a century, the Worrell 1000 remains a cornerstone of the international catamaran racing community. The leadership team is actively re-engaging with past participants, local municipalities, and corporate partners to build a robust, multi-year runway leading up to the 2028 event.

About The Worrell 1000 Race

Born from a bar bet between brothers back in 1974, Mike Worrell had a vision to create a premier catamaran long distance race, known for its demanding courses that would attract the best sailors from around the world. Running annual races from 1976-1989, there was then a 6-year absence, with races returning in 1997 and continuing until 2002. With financial issues, broken promises and the passing of Mike Worrell in 2010, the event faded away. A small group of dedicated sailors and past Worrell race staff successfully revived the event in 2019 and enjoyed additional events in 2022, and 2024, which celebrated 50 years and the "Spark that Lit The Flame", referencing the 1974 bar bet that started it all.
