The Dragon fleet enjoyed a successful weekend at the 2026 Cowes Classics Regatta, where the Dragons formed the largest class at the four-day event. For the Dragon fleet, three days of racing also determined the outcome of the 2026 British Dragon Association Classic Championship.
Friday's opening day delivered classic Solent conditions, with a strong southerly breeze, wind-over-tide chop and testing gusts creating challenging racing for crews. Sharing a start line with the Darings, the Dragons completed three windward-leeward races.
Four-up teams Ithaca and Glaurung handled the conditions particularly well in the early stages, regularly rounding the first windward marks at the front of the fleet. However, once the boats turned downwind it was GBR753 Fit Chick that found another gear. Helmed by Jono Brown, with Chris Grosscurth and Andrew Norden onboard, Fit Chick delivered a flawless performance, securing three race wins from three starts.
Behind the dominant leaders, consistency proved key for the Classic Dragons, with GBR430 Ran emerging as the leading classic after an energetic and physically demanding day on the water. Wet and exhausted crews returned ashore to enjoy the regatta's renowned hospitality and social event, thanks to Michael Cover.
Saturday's racing was abandoned with AP over A displayed early due to extreme weather conditions, giving competitors an unexpected opportunity to recover, explore Cowes and enjoy the shoreside atmosphere.
A more favourable forecast greeted sailors on Sunday, with an earlier warning signal for the Dragons as they joined the Etchells and Darings on Course A. Racing took towards Hill Head in an outgoing tide, producing close, tactical racing and plenty of passing opportunities throughout the fleet.
Despite the improved conditions, the outcome at the front remained unchanged. Fit Chick once again proved untouchable, completing another clean sweep of three race wins to finish the regatta with an impressive six wins from six races. GBR763 Bertie pushed hard throughout the day and secured second overall, while a much-improved set of results from GBR777 Furious allowed the team to leapfrog GBR768 Glaurung and claim third place overall.
The battle for the Classic Championship remained competitive. Ran produced another excellent set of results on Sunday to finish fifth overall in the regatta and secure the title of 2026 BDA Classic Dragon Champion with GBR39 Aurora finishing second in the Classic standings.
Ran's owner and helm Crispin Blyth commented: "It was hard work, a lot of wind over the six races, but it is Ran's 60th birthday this year and she was launched into Cowes and we thought she should come back for her 60th year. A good regatta, and we will come back later in the year."
The regatta concluded with a prize-giving at the Royal London Yacht Club, where Fit Chick collected the Dragon class honours. Their outstanding performance across the weekend was further recognised when they were named overall winners of the 2026 Cowes Classics Regatta, a fitting reward for a faultless series.
Dragon Solent Fleet Captain Chris Grosscurth said: "The weekend went very well. It was nice to see visiting Dragons from other fleets and nice to see some new boats preparing for Cowes Week and the Edinburgh Cup. It was a very well organised regatta by the Royal London and Royal Thames race teams. To have six races done in challenging conditions and to give very tight racing among us, it was good racing and a good time ashore."
The event once again demonstrated why Cowes Classics Regatta has become an important fixture on the Dragon calendar. Combining competitive racing, a strong social programme and a celebration of classic yacht racing, the regatta provided another memorable weekend during the British Dragon Association's 70th anniversary year.
