The NorthStar SailGP Team delivered an improved performance this weekend at the Apex Bermuda Sail Grand Prix, finishing sixth overall after two days of intense racing on the Great Sound.
Racing against the world's best teams in idyllic Bermuda conditions, the Canadian team demonstrated progression on Saturday finishing 2nd, 4th, 5th and 8th, yet struggled a bit on Super Sunday with 12th, 12th and 4th place finishes. Improved starts helped the the team remain in contention across the fleet during seven races over the weekend.
"I'd summarize the day as frustrating. If that top mark had gone differently, we'd have been high-fiving, with a position in the final three. But it wasn't to be," said Driver Giles Scott. "We've made some good gains this weekend, but we've got a lot to look at. We are not sailing the boat as well as some of the other teams, especially in the marginal foiling conditions. I think if you look at our performance generally, we sailed the boat quite well and confidently when the breeze is up. I think that is where we are strong as a team. But it's no coincidence that on a day like today, we've got to pay some serious attention."
The Apex Bermuda Sail Grand Prix once again showcased SailGP's trademark close racing and high-speed action, with teams regularly exceeding speeds of 90 km/h in front of packed waterfront crowds and a global broadcast audience.
"This event was another important weekend for our team. Bermuda is home to one of our partners, Butterfield Bank, and it was amazing to have their full support, both on the water and in the grandstands," said Phil Kennard, CEO and Team Principal. "Whilst we are all disappointed to miss out on a podium today, the team is making progress. We know there is more performance to unlock, but there are positives we can take away as we continue building momentum and get closer to our home event in Halifax."
The NorthStar SailGP Team continues to focus on development, both on and off the water, as attention now turns to the next event on the Rolex SailGP Championship calendar which will be in New York on 30-31 May, before the Canada Sail Grand Prix on 20-21 June.
