Fleet Racing Finale Sets the Stage for Medal Showdown in Hyères

The final day of fleet racing at the Semaine Olympique Française delivered a softer side of Hyères, with a light 8-10 knot sea breeze that never quite reached the forecasted pressure.

After a week that tested sailors across the full spectrum, from marginal drifting conditions to survival-mode heavy air, Friday's racing was all about patience, precision, and minimizing mistakes. With the top 10 in each fleet now advancing to the final series, all eyes turn to Saturday, where a westerly breeze is expected to build towards 20 knots by late morning. Given how dramatically performances have varied depending on conditions this week, those final races could prove decisive.

In the Nacra 17 fleet, the leaderboard has tightened at exactly the wrong time for anyone hoping for a comfortable lead. Argentina's Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco surged into first overall after a strong set of races, winning twice today and showing impressive control across the changing conditions. Italy's Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubilei remain right on their heels, just two points behind, after a slightly more inconsistent day but still firmly in the fight. After dealing with gear issues yesterday and opening the day with a 16th-place finish, Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti found their rhythm again in the remaining races. Two third-place finishes followed by a win in the final race of the series moved the double Olympic champions back up to fourth overall, just behind France's Tim Mourniac and Aloïse Retornaz. It puts them back in contention heading into the medal race.

In the 49erFX fleet, Italy's Sofia Giunchiglia and Giulia Schio once again proved their dominance in lighter conditions. As they had earlier in the week, they found another level, winning three of the four races to reclaim the overall lead at the perfect moment. Their only slip — a 17th-place finish in race three — prevented them from building a more commanding gap, leaving Australia's Laura Harding and Annie Wilmot within striking distance. The Australians started the day strong but faded slightly as conditions evolved, posting a 2, 4, 13, 11 scoreline to sit second overall. Behind them, the fleet remains tightly packed, with several teams still within reach of the podium. With stronger breeze expected for the finals, the question remains: will the Italians maintain control, or can the chasing pack capitalize on a shift in conditions?

The 49er fleet saw perhaps the biggest reshuffle, with consistency proving elusive across the board. China's Zaiding Wen and Tian Liu now lead overall after navigating the tricky conditions better than most, posting a solid 8, 3, 4 scoreline while many of their rivals slipped into double digits. France's Erwan Fischer and Clément Péquin drop to second, while Ireland's Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove — who had led earlier in the regatta — now sit third. With the points compressed across the top 10, the podium remains wide open heading into the final day. After five days of wildly varying conditions, Hyères has set up a finale where adaptability will be everything — and with stronger winds forecast, it may all come down to who can deliver when it matters most.
