Team Malizia statement on the passing of Lukas Wehage

Team Malizia, together with the family, is deeply saddened to confirm the death of Lukas Wehage, 32, from Germany, who was with the Malizia Explorer research vessel.
The tragic accident occurred on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, in the afternoon (local time), in Fernando de Noronha, an archipelago off the coast of Brazil. The vessel had arrived earlier that day from Rio de Janeiro and was at anchor in the bay of Praia do Porto for a scheduled stopover related to a scientific project ahead of its planned Atlantic crossing. Shortly after arrival, several of the people onboard including Lukas Wehage went for a swim around the boat.
According to a statement from the Health Superintendence of the island Lukas Wehage suddenly “suffered an underwater fainting spell”. The Malizia Explorer crew members nearby reacted immediately, alerting emergency services and initiating first aid. Local rescue teams responded quickly, continued resuscitation efforts at the scene, and transported him to hospital. Despite all efforts, he passed away.
The exact circumstances that led to this tragic accident are currently unclear.
Lukas Wehage had travelled several months as a backpacker on land and at sea when in December 2025 he encountered the crew of the Malizia Explorer yacht in Ushuaia, Argentina. Bringing enthusiasm, kindness, and a deep passion for sailing and the ocean, the crew was happy to have him come onboard for the Atlantic crossing a few months later in March 2026.
Team Malizia and the crew of the Malizia Explorer, along with Boris Herrmann—who is currently in Lorient, where Team Malizia is based—are in close contact with Lukas Wehage’s family and are offering their full support during this incredibly difficult time. The team is also cooperating with local and German authorities. Support is also being provided to those on board who were affected by this tragic event.
