Tight Racing at the Burghfield Sailing Club Finn Open

by Paul Carrington 11 Mar 22:43 PDT 7 March 2026

The Finn fleet gathered at Burghfield Sailing Club on 7 March for an enjoyable open meeting that delivered close racing and the usual friendly Finn-class atmosphere. The event was the first of the three one-day Spring Series, perfect as early-season sharpeners.

Ten boats took to the water for a series of short, single-lap races, with eight races completed during the day. The format provided excellent starting practice and plenty of opportunities for position changes. Despite light and shifty conditions, the wind direction proved ideal for Burghfield, producing a good beat followed by a long run and some very tight racing. At times, the difference between first and fourth place was measured in centimetres rather than boat lengths.

Taking the overall win was Daniel Dixon of Blackwater SC, who delivered an impressive and consistent performance, including four race wins. Matthew Webb of Binfield SC secured second overall, while Gareth Tweedle from Emsworth SC completed the podium in third.

Behind the leading trio, the racing remained close throughout the fleet. Paul Carrington took fourth overall, while Mark Cooper—who first sailed a Finn at this event last year—showed excellent progress during the day, finishing strongly with a race win in the final race to secure fifth place overall.

The event once again proved to be an excellent opportunity for sailors new to the fleet, or those returning to the class, to experience Finn racing and share knowledge within the boat park.

The next opportunity to join the fleet will be at Bough Beech Sailing Club on 28 March 2026. Anyone interested in joining the Finn fleet, trying the class loan boat, or who already has a boat and would like help getting started, is encouraged to contact Richard Sharp, who can help arrange support from fleet members and advice on equipment.
