3rd J/70 Winter Series at Clube Naval de Cascais

by Press CNCascais 27 Feb 03:28 PST 20-22 February 2026

The Clube Naval de Cascais hosted the 3rd Cascais J/70 Winter Series from 20 to 22 February 2026, bringing together 18 teams representing 7 nationalities for three days of high-level one-design racing. Cascais once again delivered its full range of Atlantic conditions, testing crews across heavy air, light wind, swell and tactical racing scenarios.

Day 1 - Heavy Air and Atlantic Swell

Friday opened with classic Cascais conditions: a solid 20-knot south-westerly gradient breeze, 2-3 metre Atlantic swell and significant pressure shifts across the racecourse. Three physically demanding races challenged crews on boat handling, downwind wave positioning and upwind lane management.

Race 1 was won by POR 284 - NAVIS, who executed a strong start and controlled the first beat, managing the swell efficiently on the downwind legs. FIN 1634 - Liquid Sun finished second, followed by DEN 1566 - Lady in Red.

In Race 2, POR 1846 - Peixeranha capitalised on pressure on the right-hand side of the first beat, extending on the run to take victory ahead of DEN 1566 - Lady in Red and POR 1685 - Valverde.

Race 3 delivered another shift in momentum as ITA 1798 - J Curve timed the oscillations perfectly to secure the win. Lady in Red maintained consistency in second, while POR 1282 - Another Affair rounded out the top three.

Sten Mohr (DEN 1566 - Lady in Red) commented: "Our first time ever in Cascais for me. Really, really nice sailing conditions, big waves. Very difficult for the race committee with the waves, very tricky and very fast. It was quite shifty and very puffy in the last two races. If you managed to be in the right places when it mattered, it paid off. We are here to learn and I will come back for the World Championship."

Day 2 - Light Air Patience and Tactical Precision

Saturday began under clear skies but with very little breeze. Racing was postponed ashore while the Race Committee waited for pressure to build. Although the postponement was lowered mid-morning, unstable 5-7 knot conditions led to one race being abandoned due to a major wind shift and dying breeze.

By mid-afternoon, the sea breeze stabilised sufficiently to complete two races. Race 4 was won by FIN 1634 - Liquid Sun, followed by POR 284 - NAVIS Portugal and DEN 1566 - Lady in Red.

Race 5 saw POR 8 - SailCascais execute a clean start and maintain control throughout the upwind leg and final run, taking victory ahead of Lady in Red and POR 1282 - Another Affair.

Mauro Roversi (ITA 1090 - J Curve) reflected: "Very different compared to yesterday. Yesterday we had stronger breeze and higher waves. Today was more difficult from a sailing perspective. It's our first regatta of the season, so it's a good way to start and train in tricky conditions. Cascais is a place we love - good weather, nice people, nice food. What do you want more?"

Day 3 - Tactical Finale in Medium Breeze

Sunday was forecast to be light, but Cascais delivered stable 7-9 knot conditions under sunshine, allowing three final races to complete the series.

Race 6 was won by POR 1691 - AP Hotels after a decisive final downwind leg, ahead of POR 1282 - Another Affair and BRA 1748 - Irrational Exuberance.

In Race 7, POR 8 - SailCascais found clear air off the start line and controlled the fleet to take victory, followed by IRL 1822 - Sinead and POR 1691 - AP Hotels.

Race 8 concluded the championship with POR 2 - Valverde taking the win, while Another Affair secured second and Liquid Sun finished third.

Final Overall Results:

1. POR 8 - SailCascais
2. POR 1282 - Another Affair
3. DEN 1566 - Lady in Red
1st Corinthian - FIN 1634 - Liquid Sun

Afonso Domingos (POR 8 - SailCascais) concluded: "We had strong wind on Friday with really nice surfing conditions, then medium and light conditions. We felt a little bit rusty because we hadn't sailed together for three months, but the key is teamwork. Even if the first upwind is not perfect, you recover. Teamwork is the most important thing in this fleet."

This event was supported by Vista Alegre, SailCascais, Câmara Municipal de Cascais, Visit Cascais, Marina de Cascais, Cascais News, Cascais_oficial and Sagres.
