The Olympic regatta organised by Marina Rubicón completes another day of racing with leadership changes in the 49er and ILCA 6 fleets, now led by France and the Netherlands.
The Lanzarote International Regatta completed this Wednesday the third and penultimate day of competition for the Olympic classes, in a day marked by lighter wind conditions than in previous days, once again testing consistency and racecourse reading. ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and 49er once again completed the full programme, moving towards increasingly defined standings with the final day still to come.
The day started with a West-Northwesterly breeze, ranging between 10 and 14 knots during the early races. As the day progressed, the wind eased and shifted slightly, settling at an average of around 9 knots, adding an extra tactical challenge in the final races.
France takes the 49er lead as the Wizner brothers return to the top ten
The 49er class delivered another high-level day of racing, with more than 20 crews from eight countries competing on a racecourse well known to some of the biggest names in the international fleet.
French sailors Erwan Fischer and Clément Péquin know Lanzarote's waters extremely well. It was here that they were crowned 49er World Champions in 2024, securing the title with one race to spare and becoming the first French crew in history to win the class world title.
The French crew went afloat just one point behind the provisional leaders, Germany's Simon Heindl and Conrad Jacobs, who endured a more difficult day, posting two costly results —a 15th and an 18th, the latter counting as their discard— across the four races sailed. Fischer and Péquin proved more consistent and, with finishes of 5-7-1-11, moved into the provisional overall lead ahead of the final day.
After racing, Erwan Fischer reflected on the conditions:
"We felt very good and had a fairly consistent day. Lanzarote is a demanding racecourse, with lots of wind shifts and changes in pressure, but at the same time it's very attractive. We have good feelings as a team and we're really enjoying sailing here."
His teammate Clément Péquin explained their approach to the regatta:
"Beyond the result, we have clear technical goals we're working on. We're very satisfied with the way we're sailing and how we're achieving those objectives."
Looking ahead to the final day, the French sailor added:
"Conditions here can change a lot and the wind isn't always easy to read, but we're happy with the racecourse and confident we can continue to perform well."
Jonker, new leader in ILCA 6
Dutch sailor Maxime Jonker moves into the provisional lead in ILCA 6 after a very solid day that allows her to take control of the overall standings after nine races. Belgium's Emma Plasschaert, Olympian at Paris 2024 and leader until the previous day, drops to second place, while fellow Dutch sailor Roos Wind completes the provisional podium.
Jurisic consolidates his lead in ILCA 7
Croatian sailor Filip Jurisic once again delivered a solid performance, allowing him to extend his provisional lead in ILCA 7 after nine races sailed. He now holds a margin of more than 30 points over Germany's Nik Aaron Willim, who moves up into second place, while Finland's Nooa Laukkanen sits third, just one point behind.
Decisive final day ahead
The Lanzarote International Regatta reaches its final day of racing this Thursday, with the standings still open and several titles yet to be decided on the waters off Marina Rubicón.
The Lanzarote International Regatta is organised by Marina Rubicón and sponsored by Turismo Lanzarote through its sports tourism brand Lanzarote Sports Destination, the Cabildo of Lanzarote through its Island Sports Service, the Art, Culture and Tourism Centres of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and the Yaiza Town Council; with the collaboration, among others, of the Canary Islands Sailing Federation, the Latin Sail and DinghyCoach federations.
