The second day of the 49th Palamós Christmas Race also ended without racing, as the wind failed to make an appearance in the bay. Once again, at 2:30 p.m., the day was officially called off, with crews unable even to leave the harbour, since the wind barely exceeded one knot throughout the entire day.
The morning dawned with fog along the entire coastline and across the whole of the Bay of Palamós, so early signs were not encouraging. Although temperatures were mild, around 12 degrees, the low clouds did not clear and the sun never had the chance to warm the area enough to generate even a light thermal breeze.
The Race Committees went out to sea as scheduled at around 10:00 a.m., and after more than four hours offshore, at 2:40 p.m., with conditions unchanged, the day was abandoned.
Everything now depends on the final two days of competition, for which weather forecasts are more optimistic. Although rain is expected during the early hours and on Sunday morning, forecasts indicate the arrival of a south-westerly wind of 15 to 20 knots.
The Christmas Race meteorologist, Enric Agud, explained that "looking ahead to Sunday, the change will be radical, and from mid-morning onwards the wind will blow at around 15 knots, with a tendency to increase."
The scheduled start time for racing on Sunday is 11:00 a.m., and if conditions allow, the race committee will attempt to complete three races in each class.
