OK dinghy class End of Year and UK Ranking list update

2025 has been a good year for the British OK Fleet with Andrew Mills winning the biggest ever OK World Championships in dominant style with former World Champions Nick Craig in second and Charlie Cumbley in fourth. Amazingly this is the fourth OK World Championship in a row that was been won by a Brit with Nick winning in 2024, Henry Wetherell in 2023 and Charlie in 2022.

Andrew said, "I had a nice block of training coming into the event training with Matt and Charlie at the local club and that has helped a lot and it's all gone exactly the plan... The fleet is brilliant. People come from all over the world to be here and it's just a good group of people.

"The racing is full on and brutal with the wind we have had. No one gives an inch, but when you get in everyone is there to have a beer and chat and talk about the racing. A lot of people want to race hard but leave that on the water and enjoy the social side together, which is a great thing to be part of."

International Ranking List

HD Sails' Andy Davis rounded the year out by taking the top spot in the International OK Ranking list for the first time, with once again Nick Craig taking the second spot and Torbay based Ben Flower sailing under a Canadian flag in a very impressive 7th place considering how long he has been sailing OKs

UK Home Circuit

Domestically, the Nationals were won convincingly by Oli Davenport from P&B and the UK ranking system has just been updated after the End of Season Championships at Northampton which was won by Nick Craig.

The top dog in the UK Ranking at the end of season is the ever present legend that is Andy 'Rover' Rushworth. Andy managed to hit the sweet spot with a combination of having good results and great attendance by getting to five out of the six ranking events. Well done Andy and a great Xmas present for you!

Over the year we have had 68 sailors taking part in at least one UK Ranking event:

36 sailors from the Southern region
13 sailors from the Midlands region
10 sailors from the Eastern region
8 sailors from Scotland and the North
1 international sailor

From the six ranking events in the current event window we have

2 Sailors did 5 events
6 Sailors did 4 events
15 Sailors did 3 events
19 Sailors did 2 events
26 Sailors did only 1 event

So if you want to do a 'Rover' and get to the top of the Ranking list next year, it's clear that getting the boat hooked up and off to as many events as you can is the key. Of course the more events you do, the more you are likely to improve, so it can be a very virtuous cycle!

What is clear from looking at the UK Ranking list development over the year is that making the effort to get to as many of the Ranking events as possible and especially the double point Nationals counts for as much as winning the odd event.

The graph below shows the track of every sailor who has been in the top five of the ranking list over the last year Andy Rushworth's slow, but steady rise from 20th at the start of the year to holding first place now and the great consistency shown by Richard Burton who has never dropped below third by attending four out of six events over the year and sailing consistently well.
