Extraordinary performance for Maddalena Spanu during the final event of the WingFoil Racing World Cup, taking place now in Brazil and ending on December 6.
In fact, the Young Azzurra athlete has recorded a total of 16 victories out of 16 races completed during the first three days of competition. Spanu leads Vaina Picot, the second placed competitor, by 16 points, and she is ahead of Aimilia Kosti, who is currently in third place.
The first three days of racing saw challenging weather conditions with winds at 18 to 24 knots. Seaweed along the racecourse also forced riders to perform jumps frequently to clear their foils because seaweed tangles can slow them down or even cause crashes, compromising results. The event format saw four long-distance races on the first day and two sessions of six short races per day from the second day on. Racing is held in the waters off Jericoacoara.
Right from the start Maddalena prevailed, often racing alone at the head of the fleet. At the end of the three days of racing, she recorded a total of 10 wins out of 10 races completed. The victories rose to 16 in a row yesterday, when six more short-distance races were run.
"These days have been long and especially demanding physically, but the effort has paid off. I'm happy to be leading the standings with such a solid score; it's a very satisfying result. At the same time, I'm staying super focused: tomorrow in the Medal Series I'll really give it my all" said Spanu.
Tomorrow, December 6th, will be the final day of the event with the Medal Series taking place. The top ten athletes will advance to the pre-quarter finals, quarterfinal, and semi-final stages to reach the final. The first and second-placed athletes advance directly to the final with a bonus of two races and one race, respectively. The first athlete to achieve three first-place finishes in the final will win the event.
The result of the Brazilian leg is particularly important for the overall ranking for the 2025 WingFoil Racing World Cup title. Maddalena Spanu currently leads the way, in a memorable year for the young wingfoiler, who has won the titles of European WingFoil Racing Champion and Formula Wing World Champion.
