Sailing Stalwart Margaret honoured as Pioneer in Sport at National Scottish Women in Sport Awards

Margaret Tait - a forerunner in Scottish sailing and a tireless volunteer at Port Edgar Yacht Club - has been named Scottish Women in Sport's 'Pioneer in Sport' at the highly anticipated 2025 Scottish Women in Sport Annual Awards which took place in Glasgow, 21 November 2025.

This recognition highlights 77-year-old Margaret's remarkable journey in sailing which has spanned more than four decades, during which she has broken barriers, inspired likeminded women, and championed opportunities for females in sport more broadly.

From being one of the few women involved in race management in her early years to becoming a mentor and respected figure on countless committee boats at Port Edgar Yacht Club in South Queensferry, Margaret's influence has been truly special.

Reflecting on her achievement, Margaret said: "I certainly didn't expect it. I feel honoured."

"When I grew up, I wasn't allowed to sail - but I wanted to. I had to wait till university. Then, I went home to show the men that women could sail."

And Margaret's advice to other women who have found a passion for being on the water:

"Don't stop sailing, you only get old when you stop. And I suppose that applies to all sports!"

RYA Scotland CEO Finlo Cottier said: "It is truly fantastic to see Margaret's contribution to our sport recognised at a national level. Over many years, she's made an invaluable impact at Port Edgar Yacht Club, taking new members under her wing, imparting her deep knowledge and expertise, and being an active role model to inspire more women and girls to carve a pathway for themselves in sailing."

Perhaps Margaret's most personal impact has been on her granddaughter Abby, now a qualified dinghy and powerboat instructor, who credits her Gran as an invaluable role model throughout her sailing journey.

Testament to the positive difference Margaret is making, this latest recognition follows on from an RYA Scotland Impact Award which was presented to Margaret at Port Edgar Yacht Club last year - marking formal recognition and thanks from the official governing body for sailing in Scotland for all Margaret is contributing to the sport.

Describing what the sailing community means to her, Margaret said: "I just love it. I love the interaction with all the people that I meet... they're a cut throat lot on the water, but the best of friends off the water!"
