The 110th Lipton Cup returned to San Diego's South Bay for 4 more races in the 12 race series, featuring more sparkling San Diego weather. PRO Bruce Golison shared his thoughts on today's conditions and competition. "We postponed for 30 minutes due to light and variable winds. A southwest breeze finally filled in at 7-8 kts and we got the first race of the day off just after noon.
Today's racing saw Newport Harbor Yacht Club dominate the first two races of the day - taking first in Race 1 and second in Race 2 - which gave them a nice sized standings lead. Races 3 and 4 were then dominated by San Diego Yacht Club which allowed them to stay close to the top going into tomorrow's finale. Come out and watch the exciting conclusion on Sunday starting at 1125."
At the end of the day, just like yesterday, San Diego sits just one point behind Newport but a comfortable 14 points ahead of Coronado YC which is currently in 3rd place.
Alex Curtiss, crew member on the current regatta leader Newport Harbor Yacht Club's team said "Really fun day of sailing in the South Bay. It was pretty shifty early which made it all about being in phase. As the breeze came up it became more of a boat speed race. Both NHYC and SDYC had great days! It's great that both clubs as well as Coronado are all great friends. We all have mutual respect for one another which makes it really fun sailing."
New York Yacht Club had the best overall scores on Saturday (13) to climb into 4th place overall. Skipper Pete Levesque said "Our team came together and rallied well after a tough start to the regatta yesterday. We focused on getting off the line well and putting ourselves in position to make our own decisions."
NYYC Tactician Lance Fraser also shared the adjustments made on a successful Day 2. "After a tough day Friday, we focused on the basics today: getting off the line and sailing fast and clean. We stayed disciplined, patient, and trusted our gameplan. It was about picking our moments and executing when it counted. It's a great feeling for the team to come away with this result today, but we need to keep fighting and post 3 good scores tomorrow to keep climbing the leaderboard."
Teams will clean up and gather in the SDYC Dining Room for a regatta banquet tonight.
