Thanks to effective fisheries management and the majority of fishers doing the right thing, we are set to see the return of a prized Queensland catch by the end of the year.

Public consultation is now open on proposed changes to the Spanish mackerel harvest strategy to:

  • increase the recreational boat limit from 2 to 4
  • increase the annual total allowable commercial catch
  • set a new biomass target of 48% to ensure ongoing sustainable access to the fishery.

Find out more about the proposed changes and have your say.

Consultation closes 5pm, Wednesday 8 October 2025.
