J/70 European Championship at the Royal Swedish Yacht Club - Day 4

by Julie & Christopher Howell 29 Aug 08:10 PDT 23-30 August 2025

Sporty conditions challenged teams and equipment Friday at the Apotea J/70 European Championship, as two more races brought the current total to eight.

Chilly temperatures combined with wind in the mid/upper teens and two-meter swells with a half-meter chop on top.

Vasco Serpa's Solyd of Portugal launched into the overall lead at 54 points after posting scores of 6 and 9. Two more races are planned Saturday to decide the Championship. Luis Martin Cabiedes's Noticia of Spain fell to second place at 56 points, setting up the final showdown. Doug Rastello's Good to Go (USA) placed eighth in both of the day's races to move into third overall at 63 points, with several boats hot on their heels within five points: Ralph Rosa's Mindset (BRA), Johannes Lind Widestam's Intermezzo (SWE), Richard Witzel's Rowdy (USA) and Luis Albert's Patakin (ESP).

Victor Mesterton's Taito Sailing Liquid Sun (FIN) slid into the lead of the 34-boat Corinthian Division, while Yann Inghilesi's Ciclone stayed atop the 10-boat One Pro Division.

Gulboy Guryel's Denizcik (TUR) excelled in the conditions with back-to-back bullets, followed initially by Bruno Bethlem's Aretê (BRA) and Albert's Patakin (ESP), then by Rosa's Mindset (BRA) and Martin Dent's Jelvis (GBR).

Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) is the event host, with the course off the island of Sandhamn. Racing concludes Saturday for 64 boats from 17 nations: AUS, BRA, DEN, ESP, FIN, FRA, GBR, GER, IRL, ITA, MON, NOR, POR, SUI, SWE, TUR, USA.
