ILCA Senior European Championship 2025 in Marstrand, Sweden - Day 5

by Agustín Argüelles, EurILCA 16 Aug 08:03 PDT 9-16 August 2025

The penultimate day of the 2025 ILCA Senior European Championships & Open European Trophy delivered a full mix of conditions, from light and shifty in the morning to heavy and demanding by the afternoon.

Sailors launched on schedule, with the first fleet heading out at 09:30. Racing for the ILCA 6 Women Gold fleet on the Bravo course was set for 11:00, but an unstable 4-5 knot breeze, AP flags, and a series of general recalls pushed their start back until after 12:15. The delay also affected the ILCA 6 Women Silver fleet and the ILCA 6 Men, both racing in the same area.

Meanwhile, on the Alpha course, racing was planned to begin at 11:30, and conditions there were slightly better, with a steadier 7-8 knot breeze allowing the schedule to proceed largely on time.

By the early afternoon, as forecast, the wind began to build significantly — climbing to 14-16 knots and peaking at 20 in the gusts. The swell grew from half a metre to over two metres, adding to the challenge. In these robust conditions, all three fleets completed three hard-fought races, testing both skill and stamina.

By the time they returned ashore, sailors were tired but upbeat, sharing stories over a pasta meal and turning their attention to tomorrow's final day of competition.

Because of these strong sailing conditions, unlike anything seen earlier in the week, the top of the leaderboards saw some reshuffling — with new leaders emerging in certain fleets and fresh names breaking into the top positions. Provisional leaders after today's racing are.

Tomorrow marks the final day of the championship, when the last races will decide the 2025 European champions and the medal winners in each fleet. Stay tuned for the thrilling conclusion in Marstrand.

The event is organised by The Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club (GKSS) and EurILCA; with sponsorship from PelleP, Marstrands Havshotell, Stena Line, and Ackert.
