Scheduled for Sunday 17th August, the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club's annual Round Jersey Race for cruiser/racers, sportsboats and sport catamarans, kindly sponsored by leading financial services company Citco, is open for entries. With a week to go before closure on Wednesday 13th August, the organisers are delighted to announce that entries are well on track for a modern day record.
This is an open event for Jersey sailors and visitors which will see a strong local turnout in the cruiser classes bolstered by a French fleet flying the flag for Granville. Last year's Class 1 winner Jean-Luc Pronier's Les Rapetous will be defending his win against strong competition from local boats and its French counterparts, alike. Serious competition lies ahead!
Starting in St Aubin's Bay at ten o'clock, spectators will be treated to the sight of the cruiser fleet heading out of the Bay and onwards to the eight mile distant Violet Channel buoy, south east of the Island, to follow an anticlockwise course before returning to St Aubin's Bay for the finish off the Diamond Rock buoy. The sport catamaran fleet and escorting RIBs will follow on ten minutes later but should overtake the mono-hulls well before they reach the Violet.
How long will the circumnavigation take? After a decade or more, the record remains, held by a Guernsey sport catamaran, standing at three hours and seven minutes. Last year, light conditions saw the cruisers round in six hours whilst the sport-catamarans came home in five. The forecast is for light conditions but it's early days.
The Club's ancient Jesse Boot and Cabot Memorial Trophies and a new Citco Trophy will be the top rewards in the cruiser/racer classes with Round Jersey trophies for the sportsboat and sport catamaran classes. The Round Jersey Race, whilst challenging, provides a great way of combining racing and sightseeing as boats round this stunning island.
The cut and thrust of the day's racing will be followed by a place prize-giving and supper in the RCIYC Clubhouse.
Entry is through the Notice of Race, available on www.rciyc.je/racing
