OK Nationals at Dabchicks Sailing Club - Day 1

by Jennie Clark 12 Jul 11:24 PDT 12-15 July 2025

Sponsored by Pinnell & Bax and Synergy Marine

The OK class are holding their 25 National Championships at West Mersea, with the event hosted by Dabchicks SC. Glorious sunshine greeted the competitors for day one of the event, with racing taking place in the afternoon. Today's races were sponsored by Pinnell and Bax and the very welcome after race beer was kindly provided by Synergy Marine.

PRO Paul Jackson provided a comprehensive briefing to the competitors before they went afloat for races 1 and 2. The event is being held Saturday to Tuesday, allowing those members of the fleet who'd been at the Europeans at Warnemunde to get back to the UK in time for join in this event.

Forecasts earlier in the week had suggested that the wind would be light but the sea breeze gave the competitors some exhilarating sailing around the course. Race 1 was sailed around a triangle:sausage course, and sausage:triangle was used for race 2.

With some notable names missing from this years event it's anyone's guess as to who is going to come out National Champion but today it was Oliver Davenport who took the bullet in race 1 and Ben Flower in race 2. Ben leads the fleet at the end of day one, followed by Richard Burton and Adrian Pells.

The host club have a packed programme of socials for the fleet to enjoy, with a competitors supper and quiz night being held tonight.
