9-12 July 2025
The sails have now been lowered on the 18th edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica, which this week brought together some of the most celebrated gems of classic yachting in the waters off Barcelona.
From 9 to 12 July, nearly 400 sailors representing over 10 nationalities competed in the Mediterranean for victory in what has become one of the most iconic events in the Classic Sailing calendar.
Although the third and final day of racing was ultimately cancelled due to unstable weather conditions, the general sentiment among competitors was one of satisfaction after enjoying two days of superb sailing and top-class racing.
Last day cancelled due to weather conditions
In light of the orange weather warnings, in the morning meeting with the skippers, the racing committee, led by Pere Sarquella, explained to the participants that there would be no sailing due to weather conditions. While a DANA can be dangerous on land, at sea, beside torrential rains, it can produce strong, sudden winds that can put the safety of both crew and vessel at risk.
The announcement was made at 10:00 a.m., following the latest forecast briefing from meteorologist Enric Agud, which confirmed no expected improvement in conditions. As a result, with no additional race results to be added, the overall standings across the six competing categories remain unchanged from yesterday, preventing us from knowing the conclusion of some interesting duels.
Awards for the winners of a memorable edition
The awards ceremony took place at 11:30 a.m., with awards presented by Xavier Bach, COO of Puig; Jordi Puig, President of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona; Sergi Cadenas, Vicepresident of the Catalan Sailing Federation and Pablo Garriga, Commodore of RCNB.
Ultimately, Mariska, Yanira, Clarionet, Amorita, Le Temps Perdu, and Stiletto emerged as winners in their respective classes. The Yanira and the Mariska, both Spanish vessels, were also the winners of the Enric Puig Trophy.
In Classics 2, Kanavel had a chance to close the two-point gap to the leader Clarionet. Things were even tighter in the Modern Classic fleet, where Stiletto held the lead but was level on points with Legolas and just two ahead of Melbac.
While no other class had such a thrilling finale in store, Yanira secured her name on the Classics I honours board for the fifth time, Mariska claimed top honours among the five Big Boats, Argyll topped the Época Bermudian podium, and Le Temps Perdu triumphed in the Época Cangreja division.
These sporting duels will have to wait to be settled—amicably, of course—until next year, when the Puig Vela Clàssica casts off once again from the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona.
