Europe Masters & Youth Europeans at Haying Island Sailing Club Days 2 & 3

by Lucy Boreham 5 Jul 03:32 PDT 2-7 July 2025
Europe Masters at Hayling Island © Mike Partridge TV

The forecast for both Thursday & Friday looked perfect - 10-12 knots from the SW with the likelihood of a sea breeze and Hayling Bay didn't fail to deliver.

Thursday was the start for the Youth sailors, divided into Male & Female fleets. With 3 fleets on one start line the race team were excellent with their race management (maybe not so much one of the fleets).

The youth males started first and were clean away, followed by the youth females - both doing a trapezoid with an outer loop. For the masters it was also a trapezoid, but the inner loop, which kept all fleets clear of each other.

Some confusion amongst the masters fleet when they saw the youth females coming back up wind - it seems who ever was leading the Youth female fleet took them to the wrong leeward gate and everyone else followed - leading to a race abandonment.

In the youth male, Hugo Bejstrup (DEN) and Pere Renteria Barber had and 1st & 2nd each, tying at the top with 3rd spot after day one going to Valdemar Juul (DEN).

The female youth, re-sailed race 1 after race 2, with Emma Cabre (ESP) taking the win in both races, Sara Ayats (ESP) 2nd in both and Leonor Romero (ESP) topping out the leader board to make it a Spanish 1,2,3.

It was the 2nd day of racing for the Masters, Cyril Richard (FRA) showed the fleet his experience with a clear win in both races, Steve Cockerill (GBR) having an uncharacteristic 15th in race 1, but normal service resumed with a solid 2nd place in the 2nd race of the day. Tom Morris (GBR) completing the top 3 at the end of the day with a 2nd & 3rd and able to shake off his DSQ from the day before.

Rooster spot prizes of the day were given out to the fleets and everyone enjoyed the evening sunshine on the HISC terraces.

Friday dawned with a similar feel to the day before - flat calm seas, sunshine and the promise of a steady south westerly at race time.

Race 1 saw a mix of conditions, going very light at the top of the 2nd beat, leaving a sloppy and lumpy sea state for much of the fleet to try to contend with.

In the masters Cyril continued his wining ways with another 2 bullets, his lead looking hard to beat even at this stage. Tom Morris managed the conditions well to secure two 2nd places, Steve sailing consistently to maintain 2nd overall.

After day 3 Weronika Glinkiewicz-Madej (POL) is laying 5th overall and 1st female.

In the Youth female Emma Cabre (ESP) continued her good form to score another 2 wins and Sara Ayats (ESP) a further 2 2nds. Judit Noguera Pastor (ESP) moved up into 3rd overall, keeping it a Spain 1,2,3 for a second day.

For the Youth male fleet, Hugo Bejstrup (DEN) continued his winning ways with 2 bullets, Pere Renteria Barber(ESP) with 2 3rd places.

The fleet came ashore in the afternoon sunshine ready for the Friday evening BBQ and band to enjoy ahead of what is looking like a possible big day on the water that is if its raceable at all.
