Squib National Championship 2025 at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 2

by Keith Davies 24 Jun 23:36 PDT 22-27 June 2025

Under the able hand of Torbay PRO Bill Butcher, racing continued in conditions not dissimilar to Monday. A bit more wind at times but still variable in strength and direction making starting and choosing a side difficult.

Unlike yesterday, Race 2 got away with no line issues and an early lead was established by Nick Whipp and James Budd sailing "Cariad Bach" from SCYC. Close behind were Gez Brown crewed by Harvey Worden sailing "Bacchante" also from SCYC.

Phil Aspinall and Dave Sheppard in "Guy Fawkes" from RCYC were third round the windward mark. Tom Jeffcote and Mark Hogan in "RicOShea" for SCYC were close behind. A four lap course had been set and Guy Fawkes took the lead on the second beat and held it nearly to the end of the race but were narrowly beaten by RicOShea by half a boat length. Bacchante succumbed to the conditions falling out of contention. Malcolm Blackburn crewed by Steve Allso sailing "Moonstone" from SCYC pulled up into 4th place and Ian Travers crewed by Keith O'Riordan sailing "Atomic" from Kinsale were 5th.

Race 3 also got away cleanly with last year's winners Micky Wright and Alex Porteous in Spoof from RCYC starting at the pin end and Will Davies crewed by Kevan Gibb sailing "Willpower" from Royal Forth YC at the committee boat. Both arrived at the windward mark at the same time with Jack Grogan third in Budgie's Tongue. The Rileys in Brimstone were fifth with Bryan celebrating his 75th birthday.

Many place changes occurred over the next 4 laps with Brimstone taking the lead from Spoof. Moonstone pulled up into 3rd place with Alchemy dropping to 4th. Atomic had a good day with another 5th place.

Thank you to the sponsors for the event; Batt Sails, Hyde Sails, Harken, Holt, Robline, Stichprint, Sea Sure and Westway sails.
