DuFLEX the key to sustainable, accessible cruising

Officially launched in May, the latest addition to the Noosa Ferry fleet is the boutique, hybrid-powered catamaran named HV Stillwater.
Designed by esteemed power cat specialist, Roger Hill and built by Julian Griffiths and his skilled team at Noosa Marine, Stillwater has the aesthetic appeal of "Noosa style" and the capacity to accommodate 52 passengers, including 14 wheelchairs and brail signage for vision impaired passengers.
The beamy boat with a plumb bow, described as "a big ute on water", was constructed using the DuFLEX panel system and Coosa boards, with WEST SYSTEM and KINETIX epoxy resins throughout supplied by ATL Composites.
"There is not one piece of timber in the boat - so it's totally maintenance free," Julian said.
"It's a commercial vessel and had to be lightweight, durable and easily maintained, so every piece has to be accessible and removable, impervious to wear and tear, to ensure a limited time off the water for servicing."
Roger, Julian and Lorraine Duckworth, Director at ATL Composites were recently invited out to experience Stillwater first-hand, after working together with David for just over 12 months to produce the optimum vessel from a weight, performance and structural perspective.
"I had a fun day with all 'the boys'," said Lorraine. "Stillwater is such a practical and space-friendly vessel that fits perfectly into the relaxed Noosa style.
"We had perfect weather: blue skies and smooth waters for a cruising and experiencing the typical routes planned for the Noosa River from Hasting Street, up to the lakes," she added.
"Of course, we talked boat construction and performance - we can't help ourselves - but it was certainly a fun and relaxing afternoon."
Stillwater features include bespoke finishes, comfortable lounge-style seating, and plenty of space on board for unobstructed panoramic views that soothe and relax guests, allowing them to connect with the surrounding beauty.
The aim of this unique, low impact motor yacht is to deliver an unmatched blend of environmental innovation, accessibility and laid-back luxury on the picturesque Noosa River, while setting a new standard for inclusive tourism in Queensland.
The project was supported by the Queensland Government's Accessible Tourism Elevate Fund and marks a significant milestone in making tourism accessible to all.
This commitment to accessibility is matched by Stillwater's advanced hybrid-electric propulsion system, creating a peaceful and eco-conscious cruising experience that aligns with the region's strong eco values.
"We are incredibly proud to welcome Stillwater to our fleet," said David Stielow, Owner of Noosa Ferry & Cruise Co. "This vessel represents a new chapter for us; one where sustainability, accessibility, and elegance come together to offer a truly special experience on the Noosa River. With solar panels and hybrid propulsion, Stillwater delivers an environmentally considerate, silent cruising experience."
Commenting on the feedback from users, David said, "When people experience the vessel they react super positively. They mention the luxurious feel and fine finishings. Above all, the electric propulsion has created a great impression, exceeding our expectations. There's no engine vibration or noise at all, just the sound of the water lapping at the hull. Silent, serene cruising."
Coming up and coinciding with the automobile showcase, Noosa Concours d'Elegance, 19 July, Stillwater will run special luxury transfers complete with a glass of bubbly or a beer on the return journey, which can be booked online closer to the event. The three Noosa ferries will operate a shuttle service between the venue, Hastings Street and Noosaville and Tewantin.
