Maryland has submitted a proposal to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission to simplify and update the Chesapeake Bay recreational striped bass fishing seasons.
The new plan aims to reduce regulatory complexity, improve angler access during cooler months to lower discard mortality, and better align with neighboring jurisdictions. Key changes include reopening April and early May for catch and release while closing August to all targeting, maintaining overall removals at 2024 levels. This updated baseline, if approved, would serve as the starting point for any future management changes under Addendum III. ASA joined the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas and the Marine Trades Association of Maryland in supporting this proposal.
