The Blackwater Sailing Club proudly hosted an inspiring, busy and successful Cadet Training Weekend 26-27 April welcoming more than 70 enthusiastic young sailors from aged 8 to 18 for two days of skill-building, fun and adventure on the water.

Under the expert guidance and encouragement of 20 qualified instructors, cadets who were grouped by ability and experience took part in a variety of sessions designed to develop both confidence and competence in sailing whilst working towards their RYA sailing certifications in the supportive and safe environment of the family friendly club.

Activities included rigging, boat handling, sailing skills, learning about the wind, knot tying and rope work as well as team building exercises.

Under blue skies and with a gentle wind, the weekend concluded with all the cadets enjoying an unforgettable adventure, sailing up the river Blackwater to the Maldon Promenade where they were rewarded with a delicious Rossi ice-cream.

As part of the Club's newly introduced Cadet Crewing Group, the young newcomers and non-racing sailors were supported on this trip by experienced sailors from the Mirror and Sprite dinghy classes further building their confidence and boats skills.

Safety remains a top priority of the Club and ten safety RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) were on hand throughout the weekend. Parents are also involved as helpers and were at the Prom to catch and assist the landing on the beach.

Cadet Skipper, Jonny Garlick, said: "It was inspiring to see so many young sailors learning, improving and having fun. Events like these are vital for nurturing the next generation of sailors and building a lifelong passion for the sport. My sincere thanks go to all the Member volunteers who help make these weekends happen."

To find out more about the amazing opportunities the Blackwater Sailing Club offers to young sailors of all abilities, it is hosting an Open Day on Saturday 17th May from 11.30am - 5.30pm and all are welcome. It is free to attend and there is parking. Please wear trainers if you would like to have a sail, buoyancy aids will be provided. Experienced members will be on hand to provide guidance and information.
