The eighth edition of the Regatta of the Naval Academy - RAN 630 - got underway on time today. With a wind from the east-northeast at about 12 knots, the fleet of 17 competitors set off on time at 11:00 from the waters off Livorno (on the Tuscany coast).
Amapola II got off to a good start in the centre of the line, Tintorel was in the Committee Boat and the foiling catamaran Falcon was at the pin. At the weather mark at 1 mile distance, Falcon took the lead and immediately accelerated heading to the Corsica island, followed by Amapola II and Lunatika, the winner of the last two editions.
The tracking shows the F4 Falcon catamaran in the lead, and it should arrive at the Porto Cervo gate tomorrow morning (28 April). The rest of the fleet is pretty close together, with the French solo sailor Michel Cohen (skipper of the Figaro 2 Tintorel) leading the group, followed by a line of yachts made up of Amapola II, Lunatika, Pegaso and Audace, sailed by an all-female team.
The Italian Navy sailing brig Nave Italia, was on the start hosting the guests. As the president of the Yacht Club Livorno, Professor Gian Luca Conti, said, 'Nave Italia also hosted us at the first edition of this regatta and was a great sign for all the editions that came after. We can only thank the Italian Navy and the Naval Academy for their help, without them nothing of what we have built would have been possible'.
The weather forecast shows the wind easing due to the instability caused by thunderstorms.
However, most of the fleet should still be at the Porto Cervo gate during the day and evening of tomorrow, 28 April.
The first yacht to reach the Porto Cervo gate in elapsed time will receive the One Ocean Trophy, which is offered by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Since the first RAN 630, the organisers have been particularly focused on protecting and preserving the sea, and they've signed up to the One Ocean Foundation's Charta Smeralda principles.
