Croatia once again solidified its prominent position in the International One Metre (IOM) class, hosting a truly exceptional European Championship in Rogoznica.
The pinnacle of the event saw Croatian sailor Robert Matulja clinch the gold medal in a highly competitive fleet of 98 participants. This remarkable achievement was further underscored by the fact that four additional Croatian representatives finished within the top ten, highlighting the nation's strength in this demanding sailing discipline.
Former European champion Marko Matic demonstrated his enduring skill, finishing in fourth place, while multiple world champion Zvonko Jelacic secured a commendable fifth position. Rounding out the Croatian success were Mirko Ukas and Mario Škrlj, who finished ninth and tenth respectively. Adding to the national pride, Tonko Puljiz was recognized as the top junior sailor of the European Championship.
The Croatian contingent also included notable performances from Ante Kovacevic (12th), Boris Bakotic (22nd), Tomislav Bezic (31st), Sven Forense (34th), Vedran Vesanovic (46th), and Miljenko Bezic (74th), showcasing the depth of talent within the Croatian IOM sailing community.
For Robert Matulja, this European gold medal marks a significant milestone, adding to his impressive resume that already includes five Croatian national titles and numerous top-ten finishes at both European and world championships. His victory in this highly respected international class is a testament to his dedication and skill.
According to the newly crowned European champion, the regatta in Rogoznica implemented a novel competition format closely mirroring that of Olympic sailing, a change that proved highly successful. This system fostered an exceptionally close and unpredictable competition, culminating in a thrilling final day where seven sailors engaged in a fierce battle for the podium positions.
The event further cemented the reputation of JK Val and Rogoznica as a premier venue for IOM class competitions. This marked the third major IOM event hosted by the location in the past seven years, following the 2018 European Championship and the 2022 World Championship. This consistent hosting of high-caliber events underscores Croatia's strong standing within the International One Metre Class Association. This year's European Championship achieved a record turnout, attracting nearly one hundred sailors who collectively accounted for over two thousand overnight stays.
Hrvoje Duvancic of JK Val emphasized the symbiotic relationship between sport and tourism that has developed around these championships in Rogoznica.
"IOM in Rogoznica has evolved into a globally recognized brand within the radio-controlled sailing community," he stated. "This year, we welcomed a significant number of sailors from diverse corners of the world, including Bermuda, Japan, Chile, and Brazil. Many participants seamlessly integrate their vacation with the regatta, often bringing their families to the Adriatic and dedicating time to exploring the islands, culture, and gastronomy. They perceive Croatia as an ideal fusion of competitive sport and relaxation, and Rogoznica is becoming not only a key racing destination but also a launchpad for extended journeys along our beautiful coastline." He also expressed gratitude on behalf of the organizing committee to the Municipality of Rogoznica, the Rogoznica Tourist Board, Marina Frapa, and the numerous partners whose support was instrumental in the event's success.
