AI Automates GMDSS Analysis for Real-Time Extreme Weather Warnings

PredictWind, a global leader in marine weather forecasting, has unveiled its groundbreaking new Extreme Weather Alerts, a world-first feature designed to provide sailors and mariners with timely warnings about severe weather conditions sourced from the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).

"These real-time alerts represent a significant leap forward in maritime safety," says Jon Bilger, PredictWind Founder. "By harnessing the power of AI, we're transforming complex weather data into actionable intelligence, equipping sailors with the data they need to navigate safely and take action before dangerous conditions strike."

Addressing a Critical Need for Timely Warnings

A significant challenge in maritime navigation is the difficulty mariners face quickly identifying immediate threats in lengthy GMDSS text reports, despite their vital information on dangerous weather conditions like storms, gales, and tropical cyclones. As a solution, Extreme Weather Warnings automates this process, meaning mariners no longer need to manually sift through information and lose precious time in rapidly changing conditions.

How the Extreme Weather Alerts Works

Using AI algorithms, the system analyses GMDSS text forecasts (meteorologically prepared warnings worldwide) to pinpoint critical information about extreme weather. These alerts are then delivered as instant mobile notifications for any of the user's saved locations, ensuring timely awareness of potential dangers. With just a glance at the interactive map, users can quickly identify extreme weather near them, and clicking on any alert icon reveals detailed forecast information, including the full text report for a comprehensive understanding of the conditions ahead.

PredictWind's Commitment to Enhance Maritime Safety

The PredictWind team has a deep understanding of the challenges faced by ocean goers, and this launch underscores their commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to provide potentially life-saving tools to its global user base.

Highlighting the proactive nature of the new feature, Bilger adds, "We recognised the need for a system that could proactively warn sailors about imminent dangers. "This technology directly addresses the challenges sailors face in interpreting dense weather information that can often be tricky to spot.”

Key Features of PredictWind’s Extreme Weather Alerts:

Automated analysis: AI algorithms analyse GMDSS text forecasts to provide potentially life-saving notifications for thunderstorms, high winds and tropical cyclones.

Real-time mobile notifications: Users receive instant mobile alerts, ensuring they are promptly notified of potential dangers.

Clear and concise alert summaries: The alerts provide a clear summary of the threat, along with access to the full GMDSS forecast for more detail.

Global coverage of GMDSS forecast regions: The system covers all GMDSS forecast regions, providing comprehensive protection worldwide.

Integration with existing weather tools: The alerts are integrated into PredictWind's maps, tables, and planning tools for easy access and use. (Users can enable these alerts in the Forecast Alerts section of their account.)

Extreme Weather Alerts are available now on the PredictWind Website, PredictWind App, and Offshore App for Basic, Standard, and Pro users.
