BIA recently sought an update on boating access and infrastructure being incorporated into the new Sydney Fish Markets (SFM) located in Blackwattle Bay, Sydney Harbour.

The developer Multiplex responded with the following:

  • There will be six wharves; with five for commercial vessels associated with the Markets operations;
  • Western side: Five fixed concrete wharves accommodating 8-9 large and smaller vessels, including the five trawlers SFM operates, a trapper line vessel and seasonal tuna vessels. The passenger wharf will serve as overflow for fishing fleet mooring only;
  • Eastern side: A 50m x 6m passenger wharf for public vessels, small boats, short-stay tie-ups, and nose-in pick-up/drop-off;
  • Mooring piles: Five or more mooring piles at the head of the wharf, with capacity to receive a ferry;
  • Ferry service: Transport NSW has committed to delivering a ferry service; and
  • Fuelling: Most vessels in Blackwattle Bay use a fuel barge rather than a fixed fuel station, and no fuel tanks will be installed at new SFM.
