Pembrokeshire Model Boat Club celebrates first anniversary

by Dan Jackson 2 Mar 11:59 PST 2 March 2025

On Sunday 2nd March, Pembrokeshire Model Boat Club celebrated its first anniversary. From small beginnings at Carew where the four founder members sailed for the first time to the current membership of 18 boat owners and now sailing at Pembroke's dyllic millpond.

The one design DF95 was soon adopted as the club's class and with affiliation to the Model Yachting Association members have already attended MYA events including the DF95 National Championships and DF95 Travellers Trophy events throughout the country.

Today's racing saw 9 helms participate in the first event of the Spring series. It was also a bottle event to celebrate the club's milestone. Race Officer Tim Leary set a windward leeward course. Wind strength was light and variable requiring helms to be skilful in navigating the course. Dan Jackson won the first race followed home by Paul Rendell. Rendell was using a new suit of ERA sails. Following minor adjustments to the rig Rendell won the next 2 races followed by Neil Thomas and Tim Leary. Leary went on to win the next four races in convincing style; leaving Thomas, Rendell & Jackson in his wake. Rendell won race 8 with Jackson taking the bullet in races 9 & 10.

Sailing was very close and after a dominant performance Tim Leary was declared the winner and Paul Rendell second and Neil Thomas third.

1st Tim Leary 15 points (4 wins)
2nd Paul Rendell 17 points (3 wins)
3rd Neil Thomas 23 points
4th Dan Jackson 26 points (3 wins)
5th Andrew Glaister 42 points

In concluding, the Club's Commodore Neil Thomas referred to the Club's small beginnings and reflected on its rise in popularity.

The club race twice weekly on Wednesdays and Sundays and new members can always find us via our facebook group
