The oldest video footage of Snipe racing dinghies

by Magnus Smith 16 Feb 10:00 PST
Newspaper report from the 1958 Snipe European Championship at Plymouth, England © Western Morning News

Our video archive is fully searchable, and updated weekly with the latest sailing videos, but here we look back at early sailing in the Snipe class. We have footage from the Thirties to the Sixties for you to enjoy.

Our oldest video covers various National Championships in Italy, in 1937 including the Snipes.

Next is a very long video covering Snipe, C Scow and Lightning sailing on Lake Wawasee, from 1936-1954. You can always skip to 7m35s, or 8m40s, or 12m10s to get direct to the Snipe action. This lake is in Indiana, USA.

The 1955 Cannes regatta included the Flying Dutchman class, as well as Snipes.

A royal visit to the Bahamas, Nassau Sailing Club, in 1959 included Snipes amongst the keelboats.

Here is a video purely looking at one class now: World Championships 1963

From 1963, a mix of Snipe, Finn and Star racing, but the location is unknown!

Finally we have the World Championship 1969, at Angola (Africa).

What of the rest?

Do you know the location of any other old Snipe videos? We would love to share these with sailors worldwide. You can submit video links for immediate review.
