The 2024 Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race began with a measured approach as the Race Committee navigated challenging weather conditions, delaying the scheduled 11 am start. After closely reviewing the forecast and timing for the crucial Banks Strait transit, the start was rescheduled to just after 2 pm, ensuring improved conditions and a more favourable tide window.

Attention turned to Fork in the Road, the Bakewell-White design skippered by Gary Smith, as it aimed for a clean start in its quest for a record 10th line honour. While its waterline length offers a clear advantage, Fork in the Road faces stiff competition from the Beneteau 45 Audere (Andrew Sinclair) and the X-43 Scaramouche (Anthony Williams), both eager to challenge for the lead.

The race within the race, from Beauty Point to Low Head, provided an exciting glimpse at the line honours contenders. Starting just after 2:30 pm in fresh 28-30 knot westerly conditions, Audere launched off the line with impressive speed, matching Fork in the Road as they powered out of the Tamar River. However, it was Fork in the Road that took the lead at the Farewell Beacon, setting the pace as the fleet turned east along the coast toward Banks Strait.

This race is shaping up to be a challenging test along Tasmania's coast. Crews may encounter several "parking lots" along the way, especially as they turn the corner to head down the east coast, where the broad westerly flow could stall progress at times.

Boats are anticipated to begin arriving in Hobart from December 29 onwards.
