When Skip Novak's Pelagic Adventure Sailing expedition sets off on its delivery passage from Puerto Williams in Chile to Itajai in Brazil in Spring 2025, the Pelagic 77 yacht Amundsen will be, in a small way, keeping seas cleaner using its onboard Wavestream bilge filter system.

Skip Novak has always paid particular attention to marine environmental protection while working in the Antarctic waters with strict marine pollution protocols. Consequently, he has fitted Wavestream bilge filters onto all his previous vessels. The Wavestream is best known for its ability to ensure no trace of oil or diesel gets emitted overboard from the vessel's bilge water.

Skip Novak says, "The world has recently become much more aware of the issues of micro pollutants getting into the marine environment and the dangers these now pose. We all know about the harm from emitting diesel and oil and that is why I have always chosen to fit products such as the Wavestream onto our polar expedition vessels. The fact that Wavestream filters also pick up the very tiny microfibres and microplastics is an added advantage as almost everything we use and wear onboard will shed microfibres and microplastic - such as our clothing, bedding, fabrics, ropes, as well as other particles such as paint fragments and so forth - and these get washed down into the bilges. Now we can be confident that every single trace of pollutant is captured and only clean water gets pumped overboard."

The Wavestream filter fitted onto Amundsen ensure that any traces of oil, as well as micro pollutants are trapped within the cartridge, ensuring that only the highest worldwide standard of 5 ppm (parts per million) is achieved. A single drop of diesel in half a litre of water is about 40 ppm. The filters also capture particles to a smaller diameter than that of a human hair.

The filter can hold up to three times its own weight of oil, and depending on use, the Wavestream filter may only need changing once a year, and replacement filters cost around £25 + VAT.

The Pelagic 77 Amundsen is currently booking crew for its delivery passage - taking place from 24 March to 23 April - to sailors who want to build their sea time and practise celestial navigation and seamanship skills. The expedition includes a five-day RYA shore-based instruction course and assessment for the Ocean Yacht Master theory syllabus followed by a 12-day cruise of the Beagle Channel and possible rounding of Cape Horn. The delivery north up the east coast of South America covers roughly 2,000 nautical miles from Puerto Williams to Itajai in Brazil.
