MIA launches online WHS Course for marina workers

The Marina Industry Association's (MIA) training body, the Marina Training Institute (MTI) has launched its most significant educational initiative in years: a comprehensive online anytime Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) course tailored specifically for the unique risks and challenges of the industry.
The two-hour online course is designed for all who work on or near a marina industry, whether on the dock, or in the office, ensuring workers understand the unique environment and risks that they or others could be exposed to and how to keep everyone safe.
Suzanne Davies MIA CEO said, "Many workers entering the marina industry lack awareness of the specific WHS risks they may face. This course addresses that gap, providing essential knowledge that ensures an awareness of the most common potential hazards when employees are working at a marina and the knowledge of how to keep themselves, and others safe. It will empower employees and foster a culture of safety."
A sample of the topic's participants will learn about include:
- Working around boats: Recognising the risks posed by moving vessels including crush injuries and entrapment.
- Working Around Water: Understanding what hazards are present in aquatic settings and essential protocols to minimise risk of injuries.
- Rope Handling: Best practices for safe and efficient use of ropes in various scenarios.
- Confined Spaces: Recognising what confined spaces are, the hazards present and implementing safety measures in these areas.
- Electrical Safety: Understanding electrical risks and safe practices to mitigate them.
The course further provides marina owners and operators with a solution to standardised and documented safety training for its entire workforce.
Commenting on the course Jayson McDonald, CEO RMYC Broken Bay reviewed the course in his capacity as Chair of the MIA's Education Committee and said, "The thing I really like about this course is that all the key risks are covered, and it is standardised for everyone who takes it. Everyone can be expected to have the same baseline safety knowledge upon completion. It will be an enormous help with compliance as it provides clear evidence of the information given to each worker and their understanding."
The content is engaging and includes real-life scenarios and case studies. Quizzes and assessments offer tangible evidence of understanding, serving as a crucial first line of defence in the event of an incident.
