2024 J/22 World Championship at Eastport Yacht Club - Day 1

by Julie & Christopher Howell 23 Oct 2024 16:02 PDT October 21-27, 2024

Forty-eight teams representing 15 states and four countries took to the waters of the Chesapeake Bay for the inaugural day of the J/22 World Championship in Annapolis, Maryland.

Summer-like conditions greeted racers with blue skies, temperatures in the 70s and winds at 8-10 knots in a light chop. The Race Committee managed three races, with up to 11 planned. Travis Odenbach's Honeybadger compiled all top five scores (5,4,2) to capture the initial advantage at 11 points. Only two points are separating the top three, as Chris Doyle's The Jug 4 1 holds second and Glenn Darden's Baby Doll third.

Chris Doyle's The Jug 4 1 kicked off the Worlds with his first of two consecutive bullets on the day in race one. Following him in the first contest were James Freedman's Miss Conduct and Kurt Taken-Holtze's Turn Down 4 What. Rounding out the top group in race two were Will Welles' Cougar and Brad Julian's Yard Sail. Local Jeff Todd's Hot Toddy prevailed in the day's final battle, trailed by Odenbach's Honeybadger and Darden's Baby Doll.

Eastport Yacht Club facilitated two days of smooth registration and inspection, including a practice race on Tuesday. Racing continues through Saturday.
