Alinghi Red Bull Racing won the only race sailed today with the Group A teams.

Four races were scheduled to complete the Qualification Round and for the top three teams in Group A and B to progress to the Semi-Final.

After being held for a short time ashore organisers were hopeful of getting racing under way despite there being only light winds on the race course along with a heavy swell left over from yesterdays strong winds gusting to 40kts.

Around middday, one race was sailed, in which all of the six boat fleet came off the foils at one stage. Their undoing was the large 1.3metre swell that was off axis with the breeze. They had to sail directly into it on starboard tack and they were pushed by it sailing downwind on port gybe/tack. FRA fell off their foils before the start. USA fell off their foils on Leg !, GBR fell off their foils on Leg 2. ITA passed GBR while they were off their foils. NZL got a double penalty for sailing outside the course boundary. The race was shortened to three legs.

Mark 1: 04m 36sec - NZL; GBR (+05sec); ITA (+22sec); SUI (+1m 32sec); USA (+2m 51sec); FRA (+3m 12sec)

Mark 2: 13m 05sec - SUI; GBR (+1m 21sec); USA (+3m 33sec); NZL (+03 48sec); ITA

Finish: 17m 04sec - SUI; GBR (+3m 19sec); USA (+ 4m 14sec)

Racing was abandoned for the day around 1600hrs and the outstanding races have been held over until Friday

Provisional Forecast Race Day 4: To be updated.

Thursday September 10 Sept

The morning winds are offshore from the North-West. The wind will die out by mid-day and the breeze from the sea may struggle to establish later on.

In the afternoon we expect light winds around 4 to 8 knots. The wind direction will not be well settled and the wind direction can have a large range from East to South, with possible big wind direction shifts.

Sea state is recorded this morning on a wave buoy close to the race course at 1.3 meter from the South at 6-second interval. The waves will not change much during the day and they will make tricky sailing conditions combined with light winds.

The sky will be mostly clear with some clouds in the afternoon, and temperatures will go up to 24 degreesC.
