J/70 Corinthian US National Championship at Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May - Day 2

by Julie & Christopher Howell 7 Sep 2024 18:51 PDT September 6-8, 2024

Another three races went in the books on Saturday at the J/70 Corinthian US National Championship hosted by Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May in New Jersey. Conditions again permitted three races, bringing the total to six, and including now the discard.

This led to a shuffle of the leaderboard, moving Edward Gary's Ayacucho with Travis Carlisle, Brad Read and Brendan Read to the top with 12 net points. The team has proved the most consistent with no score worse than a fifth. Brian Keane's Savasana leapt up to second overall with 14 net points. They hold three bullets, but also a trio of finishes of 6,6,5. Day one leader Cate Muller-Terhune's Casting Couch dropped to third, but well within striking distance, at 16 net points.

In Saturday's initial battle, Keane's Savasana earned their second bullet of the series, trailed by Gary's Ayacucho and John Gochberg's USA551. Jim Golden's Derecho recovered from an eighth to take the race five victory, with Gary again runner-up and David Franzel's Spring in the bronze position. Keane succeeded in the day's final race, beating a squall to shore with Franzel and Muller-Terhune.

North Sails's expert Allan Terhune has been on the water to observe racing and conduct debriefs ashore. Racing concludes Sunday for the 24 teams.
