This iconic venue was the perfect stage to celebrate twenty years since the ISO class first travelled to Italy for a Eurocup.
The ISO class is still a vibrant and fun class after 35 years of sailing, with a broad variety of sailing skills and ages of boat and sailor. In this event there were sailors aged from 16 to 72 and boats from 1996 all the way to boats that only came out the mould a month before the event. Some of the teams had travelled a long way and arrived from Sunday 28th July, giving a number of days of sailing in this stunning venue. There was some great Ora wind (that's the afternoon breeze for those who have not been to Garda) a nice force 4 gusting 5. That's enough to blow the travel cobwebs of 1200km from London away.
As the first day arrived the boat yard started to fill, and many familiar faces arrived with hugs and handshakes all around. It reminds you that this sport we all take part in is so much more than just a sport. Long distance, long term friends coming together for some fun on the water and some good times on the shore. There were some new faces as well, a very welcome sight in this fantastic racing dinghy from the 1990s.
With seven Italians, one Dutch and three Brits taking to the water for the 12 noon start, Day 1 was under way. The day's Ora didn't disappoint with some great long beats and exhilarating rides back to the leeward mark, Riva lived up to its reputation for good winds! Everyone came off the water with cheeks hurting from grinning all the way.
The next three days were morning starts, due to some rather unusual weather forecast. Day 2 and Wednesday's Peler (that's the morning wind) tested everyone's resolve - and boat handling skills. What a blast some very big winds and good sized chop made for fast and furious with every boat in the fleet having a swim at some point. Sadly 2504 missed most of it after a capsize left the crew falling on the boom and breaking it. Ho hum, that's sailing.
Back on the water for Friday and Saturday's Peler and, oh yes, grin factor 10++ all morning. Just what we all made the trek for...
Congratulations to winners Rob Howlett and Henry Collings and big well dones to Filippo Gatti and Janna 2nd and to Dave Poupard and Rachel Poupard 3rd. And Bob Ladell and Tom Cave in 2504? Well, we made 5th, despite dropping a day with the broken carbon boom. Next time...
